Truffle Hunting Dogs

ROME. July 25

In Umbria, north of Rome (the capital of Italy), starting September 28th and lasting till the middle of December, dogs with well trained noses go out into the woods with their owners to find truffles. A truffle is a rare fungus that grows wild on the roots of oak, willow, hazelnut and poplar trees in Italy. Truffles cost a lot of money – about $100 an ounce! It is a food delicacy somewhat like a mushroom.

Any kind of dog with proper training can hunt truffles. The training takes 3 to 4 years!

One dog once found a truffle that weighed 1 pound and 14 ounces. Can you work out how much money he earned?
