Dogs Driving Cars – What!?

Dogs driving cars! What!?

Dogs driving cars 2014

There are these three dogs in New Zealand that can actually drive a real car down a real road by themselves!

Really, it’s not some crazy video game?

Yes, really… And “No”, it’s not a crazy video game… They are Ginny, Porter and Monty and they are rescue dogs.

A rescue dog can be either a stray dog, or a dog that has been neglected, or sometimes even abused by its owner! These dogs are usually saved by various animal rescue organizations around the world and are available for adoption.

Ginny, Porter and Monty were trained to drive by the Auckland Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). They wanted to show New Zealand – and as it’s turned out the world – how amazing these animals are.

“Some people think that by getting a shelter dog they’re somehow getting a second class citizen; we’re with these dogs every day, we know how wonderful they are,” said Christine Kalin from the SPCA.

How did they do it?

To position the dogs to drive, their front paws were placed on the steering wheel, while their back paws rested on levers attached to the accelerator and brake. They followed commands of the trainers, who walked alongside the car during each drive.Porter

It took about 2 months to teach them to drive.

Meet The Drivers:

GINNY: a Beardie Whippet Cross. I’m 1 year old and I’m a girl. I’m a driving dog.

PORTER: a Beardie Cross. I’m 10 months old and I’m a boy. I drive cars too.

MONTY: a Giant Schnauzer Cross. I’m 18 months old and I’m a boy. Oh, and I drive a MINI.

Focused and totally alert. I wish some of our L.A. drivers could do as well.
